Recap of a Full Weekend of Mid-Atlantic Racing

Based on the very anectodal evidence presented on The Facebook, many VHTRC members were not deterred by the Hurricane Joaquin-inspired, one week postponement of the Grindstone 100, and instead they turned that extra week of tapering into strong race performances. Brad Hinton led the club’s slew of finishers, coming in fourth place overall.

Up in Pennsylvania, the Oil Creek races were being held. Of the 84 finishers of the 100 miler, Danny Mowers parlayed his win at The Ring a month earlier into a strong third place finish, and first among the many VHTRC participants. And for many, having a 100 mile race would be enough. But Oil Creek gives you more! There is a rare 100k option and also a tough 50k race for you to feast on as well.

The VHTRC’s club race for the weekend was the second annual PB&J 50k held on the trails and gravel roads within Prince William Forest Park. This year the race was under the primary direction of new RD Chris McIntosh, and entertaining times were had by all! Congratulations to the VHTRC’s Evan Fisher, who was first female and first overall! Gray Weaver was the first club male to finish, and he was third overall.

Now, under normal circumstances, a club race would be the highlight of any race weekend. But not last weekend. Not on a weekend when Animal returned to trail racing!! That’s right - Dennis Herr, fresh off his spectacular 100 mile performance running on the paved course at the Race for The Ages over Labor Day weekend, returned to the trails, and his first race in many years. Our buddy Dennis completed the third race in the West Virginia Mountain Trail Runners’ Trilogy. The trilogy consists of a 50k on Day One, a very tough 50 miler on Day Two, and then a Half Marathon on Day Three. For the second straight year, and third time overall, Dave Frazier was the overall winner of the Trilogy. Many members of the VHTRC’s Usual Suspects made the trek out to participate in the event as well. But the highlight was seeing Dennis get that half marathon done. And thanks to timely filming by Dave’s wife Erin Frazier, you can see his finish as well.
